Ahh Intel… You always had a habit coming so close, and yet stopping before the finish line.

One of the side projects that came out of the failed Larabee project back in 2009, the Xeon Phi was a series of multi-threaded CPUs that acted as a bridge between a conventional CPU and a GPU with a focus on parallel processing and multiple threads. As a traditional CPU, I couldn’t think of a practical use for these outside of some bespoke virtual machine work and even then, I’m certain that anyone who needed it for that has either the money or know-how to come up with a much better idea than this.

At this point in its life, this is something more of a bragger’s rights product than something you would do simulation work on these days. And the likelihood that you could use it for that becomes moot once you remember that you can buy a 4060Ti for $100 more and get comparable, if not better, performance.

Still, it has a steel shroud and look hella cool. That’s worth something.
